Making art during a time when stay-at-home orders are in place has challenged me to create with what I have around me. There is a simplicity to making images using only a scanner, a black cloth, and whatever household object I can find. Using scanography as a medium through an HP ENVY printer/scanner I found in my parents’ basement in Staten Island NY, I am attempting to document my new normal using personal objects available to me during the COVID-19 quarantine.
To be honest, I struggled with this project. Depending on the day, I had a ton of ideas but struggled with the inability to put my feelings into a physical piece of art. I found that my physical limitations stretched to my creative-side, forcing me to push through my own boundaries of what I thought was possible. This feeling of being not only physically but also creatively “stuck” has influenced me to use a scanner, a tool I would not have normally used in my artistic endeavors. My decision to use a scanner stems from having limited space to create and develop my ideas.
